British grocer moves further north in Central Valley

Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market, the U.S. subsidiary of the British grocer Tesco (LSE: TSCO), the world's third largest retailer, is expanding its stateside footprint with the March 23 opening of a store in Modesto.

The store at Oakdale Road and Lancey Drive is one of 10 the company plans to open by the end of April in California.

The store openings will create more than 275 jobs, the company says.

Fresh & Easy will also open two stores in San Francisco early this year, it says.

Entry-level positions start at $10 an hour in California and offer quarterly bonuses of up to 10 percent as well as a 401(k) with company match. The company provides all employees the opportunity to work at least 20 hours per week, which entitles everyone to vision, prescription drug, dental and medical coverage with Fresh & Easy paying at least 75 percent, it says..

Fresh & Easy, which entered the U.S. in November 2007, now operates more than 150 stores in California, Arizona and Nevada. It has stores open in Bakersfield, Reedley, Fresno and Clovis in the Central Valley, with plans to add stores in Elk Grove, Rocklin, Galt and the Sacramento area.
